Biofertiliser | Biogas produced from food waste and other organic waste is used for cooking using a simple appliance in over 12,000 homes in India; in the UK only 4 households use biogas for cooking, through a Rayburn or Aga. If biogas is used in a boiler or in a stationary engine then it is often not necessary to clean it. The exception is that with certain digester feedstocks there is a high level of H 2 S which can be corrosive to an engine. There are inexpensive ways in which H 2 S can be scrubbed out of the biogas. This may include air injection within the process tanks, or passing the biogas through iron filings. If the biogas is used as a vehicle
fuel then it is normally upgraded to "biomethane" which is defined
as pipeline quality gas derived from a recent biological source. The
upgrade process includes the removal of CO 2 , H 2 S and moisture,
enabling the biomethane to be effectively compressed to a pressure
of 300 bar. An 80-litre cylinder of biomethane can run a Volvo car
for about 150 miles. In Finland a farmer runs his Volvo on biogas from
his cows, and on the back of the car it says: " Manure is my fuel - 0.5m
3 of manure or 60kg of kitchen waste per 100km "!
