Cow Slurry

Cow slurry is one of the best products to ensure a stable process as it contains a healthy population of anaerobic bacteria produced within the cow's stomachs.   The problem with slurry is that the cow has already digested much of the organic dry matter utilising this energy itself and producing its own biogas.   This is the reason why an additional feedstock should ideally be co-digested with cow slurry.

Problem Feedstocks

There are a several feedstocks that should always be co-digested to ensure that the process is kept stable.   These are feedstocks that are often either very high in volatile material or have high nitrogen content. These types of feedstock include poultry manure, abattoir waste and glycerine.   The high volatile concentration or high nitrogen content will cause an unstable process if digested as a single substrate.   Co-digestion, as previously stated, can help to create a stable process through the introduction of a variety of bacteria and additional sources of carbon for the process to function effectively.
