Scottish Plants

The Design

All the biogas plants are based on the same design, each built specifically to accommodate the farm's production of slurry. The plant sizes were based on the number of cattle and the length of time they were housed during the year. Each plant consists of a reception tank, a digester tank, a digestate storage tank, gas holder and a plant room that contains a heat exchanger, feed, discharge and heating pumps, a control panel and a biogas boiler.

The tanks are above ground cylindrical tanks fabricated in glass coated steel panels and constructed on concrete bases. The digester tank is fully enclosed to maintain the anaerobic conditions in the digester. This also ensures the capture of biogas and maintains insulation to reduce heat loss.

The plant is fully automated through a simple control panel in the plant room. To maintain the flow of biogas the digester is fed and discharged from on a frequent basis and maintained at a temperature of 42 o C. The plant utilises heat from the boiler produced using the biogas.

The digester content is kept homogenous using a gas mixing system developed by Greenfinch.

Each plant has been integrated into the farm waste management system. The slurry is collected from the cow sheds either through slats or scraper systems and is pumped into the reception tank once or twice per week.   These plants have not only enhanced their waste management systems, but it has also given them two valuable by-products.   The farms use the surplus biogas in boilers, for heating on farm and for domestic use. The digestate, a slurry based by-product, is used by the farmers as a bio-fertiliser. The nutrients within the digestate are more available than those in the raw slurry, which means that the digestate has an increased value, and can save the farmers money by reducing their requirement for mineral fertiliser.   The digestate is also more homogenous with fewer odours.
