Food Waste Digesters

We all know that solutions need to be found for the benign recycling of the putrescible fraction of household waste, as well as restaurant waste and food processing waste.

The simple reasons are that putrescible waste, when not properly recycled causes environmental damage; contains pathogenic organisms and contaminates dry recyclable waste.

The food waste research Greenfinch has carried out over the past 12 years and the design, construction & operation of the South Shropshire Biodigester has proved that the process of anaerobic digestion and biogas provides the safe, sustainable and environmentally benign solution for food waste.

Our pioneering work has been driven by existing and pending legislation, but above all it makes sense because the solution is so simple.

The weekly collection of source-separated food waste is now being recognised by the Waste & Resource Action Programme (WRAP), a Government funded organisation , as being the most successful way of diverting this waste from landfill.   Parallel to this, WRAP is promoting the use of anaerobic digestion to treat food waste given its potential to be a source of renewable energy & an organic fertiliser for crops. WRAP encourage local authorities to take this in to account when they consider their waste collection strategies.

For more information on weekly collections, please follow the link to the left.

The economics of anaerobically digesting food waste is attractive with the combination of gate fees, sales of renewable electricity and heat, and for local authorities.
