Greenfinch

The research facility has always been at the heart of Greenfinch enabling us to be at the forefront of anaerobic digestion and biogas technology. Research started in 1996 with initial investigations into the anaerobic digestion of food waste. This research progressed as three separate projects over seven years, in conjunction with Southampton University and South Shropshire District Council.

In 2003 funding for a completely different project was approved by the Dti investigating the use of ryegrass as an energy crop using anaerobic digestion technology. This ryegrass project led onto Cropgen commencing in 2004. Cropgen was an EU collaborative research project, within which Greenfinch was an industrial partner exploring the anaerobic digestion of agricultural waste and energy crops within the UK.

A range of biological and mechanical experiments are now carried out within the research and laboratory facility. Commercial bench & pilot scale anaerobic digestion trials are offered as a service. Trials are commissioned for a whole range of different reasons and with a variety of objectives depending on the information required by the client. As a minimum the trials will assess the methane yields and biogas quality to be expected from given feedstocks. They will also produce a representative digestate that can then be tested for its nutrient concentration.
