The Burford Project

In 1996 Greenfinch were awarded a SMART grant by the DTI for an 18-month project to investigate the feasibility of recycling food waste and sludge by means of a biogas plant. The project also included a novel method of aquaculture for recycling digestate using aquatic weeds and carp.

The source of the food waste was the kitchen and plate waste from a café-bar and the sludge was from the public toilets serving the café-bar.

The project was very successful and led directly to the Ludlow Project, whose objective was to demonstrate biogas technology for source-separated kitchen waste collected from 1200 households.
